Buku ini membahas hukum melalui perspektif sosiologi hukum dengan menempatkan hubungan antara norma, institusi, masyarakat, dan kekuasaan sebagai fokus utama. Pembahasan mengkritisi legalisme yang memandang perubahan aturan sebagai solusi utama, sekaligus mengkaji kesenjangan antara law in books dan law in action, pluralisme hukum, living law, hukum responsif dan progresif, serta transformasi digital. Buku ini juga menyoroti bagaimana distribusi sumber daya, struktur kelembagaan, dan kemampuan masyarakat mengakses hukum memengaruhi terwujudnya keadilan. Dalam konteks Indonesia, hukum dipahami sebagai proyek sosial yang terus diproduksi, dinegosiasikan, dan diperebutkan. Pada akhirnya, buku ini menawarkan pemikiran tentang hukum yang mampu membatasi kekuasaan, menjamin akses terhadap hak, mengakui pluralitas secara kritis, serta membuka ruang bagi transparansi, akuntabilitas, dan koreksi institusional.
