Buku ini membahas tentang konsep dan implementasi pendidikan untuk pembangunan berkelanjutan yang fokus pada tiga aspek, yakni ekonomi, sosial budaya dan ekologi dalam perspektif Al Qur’an. Muhammad Umar Chapra menganalisis dengan tajam sejumlah dugaan yang menyebabkan surutnya pengaruh Islam di kancah global. Menurut Chapra, walaupun di tengah nuansa suram tentang kemunduran umat Islam, dia menyuarakan optimisme yang mendasar. Alasannya karena jarang sekali ada ko?munitas di dunia yang hidup berkelanjutan selama lebih dari 1400 tahun. Umat Islam terbukti merupakan suatu komunitas yang mampu bertahan, tidak kunjung punah, meski diterpa bermacam-macam tantangan zaman.
Lembaga pendidikan yang menerapkan pendidikan untuk pembangunan berkelanjutan perspektif Al-Qur’an, menggabungkan lima dimensi konsep pendidikan untuk pembangunan berkelanjutan; yaitu spiritualitas atau religiusitas, pendidikan, ekonomi, ekologi, dan sosial budaya. Dengan mengintegrasikan antara pendidikan umum dan agama karena tujuan dari pendidikan untuk pembangunan berkelanjutan ini, adalah untuk menciptakan khalîfah di muka bumi ini, sebagai penebar ajaran rahmatan lil ‘âlamin.
